• What will I do during this program?
  • Biorock Project Part One – (2 days, 4 dives) Learn about Biorock technology and how and why the Biorock project was established. Help with underwater coral gardening and adopt a baby coral.
  • Fish ID Workshop – (1 day, 2 dives) Learn more about marine animals we see underwater, their habitat and behaviour 
  • Underwater cleanup and predator hunt (1 day, 2 dives) Learn about underwater coral predators, how to find them and how to get rid of them if necessary.
  •  Reef Check Eco Diver course – (4 days, 5 dives) Learn about reef survey methods, fish, invertebrate and coral substrates ID and participate in 1 complete Reef Check survey.  The survey results will be logged into the global Reef Check database.
  • 2 Reef surveys on Pemuteran local reefs – (1 day, 2 dives)
  • 2 Reef surveys on Menjangan reefs – (1 day, 2 dives)
  • Biorock Project Part Two – (2 days, 4 dives) Do reef surveys and fish counts on the Biorock project.  Results will be sent to Tom Goreau, the main scientist in charge of the Biorock project.

   

• What program do you follow during the Reef Check Eco Diver course?

   

  • Day 1 – Theory
  • Day 2 – Fish and Invertebrate ID plus 2 dives (offshore)
  • Day 3 – Coral Substrates ID plus 2 dives
  • Day 4 – Survey methods workshop plus 1 complete Reef Check survey dive (data will be logged into Reef Check database afterwards)

   

• Why do we do most of our survey dives in Pemuteran instead of Menjangan?

  Menjangan island can be more crowded than Pemuteran reefs and there is a bigger chance that groups of divers will disturb transect lines. 

  Pemuteran reefs also tend to have less current, which makes them more ideal for surveys, especially in the beginning, when divers are still learning how to survey in the correct way. 

  Finally, we are hoping to establish an MPA in Pemuteran in the future, and the survey data will be invaluable to eventually see if the MPA is a success or not.

• Who should apply?

  Any competent diver with an interest in Marine Biology, Ocean Conservation, Reef Survey techniques and Biorock technology will enjoy this course this course.  

  Both recreational and professional divers might find it gives them a better insight into their underwater environment and how different types of human activities impact this environment.
