You will get the opportunity to find out more about the Pemuteran Biorock Project, as well as get certified as a Reef Check Eco Diver, participate in reef surveys, clean-ups and predator hunts and learn more about the animals you will encounter underwater!

Divemaster Reef Check Eco-Diver Pemuteran

Details of the program

The Pemuteran area is not only famous for the nearby Menjangan Island, but also for its non-crowded home reefs in Pemuteran Bay. These include dive sites such as the underwater temple garden and the BioRock project directly in front of Bali Diving Academy’s Dive Center.

The Biorock is a reef restoration project that was started in 2000, which Bali Diving Academy has been actively supporting ever since. The reef is located right in front of Bali Diving Academy and perfect for both experienced and student divers. Non-diving family and friends will also enjoy the snorkeling here and be fascinated by the artificial structures mixed with natural reef!

The first 4 Weeks will be focused on the PADI Divemaster course. After that 1 week will be dedicated to the reef-check eco diver course of 4 days plus an additional 2 days of dive surveys.

Biorock Project Part One
Theory:
- Discuss why the Biorock Project was necessary, how it was established and how it works
- Explain problems specific to the Biorock project and discuss coral predators that need to be manually removed
Practical:
- Dive on the Biorock Project to see what it entails
- See first-hand how the electric system works
- Help with underwater coral gardening, which involves cleaning structures, making sure corals are properly attached and searching for coral predators
- Help to create coral fragments to attach in nurseries and transplant to mature structures (this program is dependent on whether fragments are needed at that specific time and participation cannot be guaranteed)
- Visit another project in Pejarakan to compare 2 different projects and evaluate coral health
Fish ID Workshop
- Theory:
  - Discuss Fish Identification and behavior as well as how to use the Fish ID slates
  Practical:
  - Do 2 Fish ID dives trying to identify as many different species as possible
Reef Check Eco Diver Course
Theory and Course practical work (4 days):
- Learn how to identify key indicator fish, various reef substrates, corals and invertebrates.
- Learn how to independently conduct full scale reef surveys by using globally standardized Reef Check methodology
Practical: (additional to the 4 days) additional surveys.
- Carry out 2 reef surveys on a Pemuteran offshore reef
- Carry out 2 reef surveys in Menjangan Island on a daytrip
- Submit the survey results to the global database
Biorock Project Part Two
Practical
- Conduct both Reef Check surveys and fish count surveys (by taking photos) on the Biorock Project and submit the info to Tom Goreau, the marine biologist in charge of the Project
Other activities
- Participate in a Trash Heroes beach clean-up every Wednesday
- Organize/participate in an underwater clean-up
- Do a predator hunt either in Menjangan or a Pemuteran offshore reef

Q & A

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLYING FOR THE BIOROCK DMT INTERNSHIP?

There is no need to be a diver or scientist to participate in the Biorock Coral Reef Conservation Internship. However, because this internship is done in conjunction with the PADI Divemaster course, you will spend a lot of time in the ocean . Therefore, you need to be at least PADI Open Water Course certified. The protection of our nature, environment and underwater biodiversity should be of great importance to you.
WHO SHOULD APPLY IN THE INTERNSHIP AND HOW?

Working closely with a PADI Instructor you’ll fine-tune your dive skills, improve upon what you learned in the rescue diver course, increase your knowledge of diving equipment, environment, physics and physiology and learn dive management and supervision abilities. You’ll also complete deep and search and recovery training (if you don’t already have these specialties) and learn how to deliver dive site briefings.
The water temperatures can range from 16 degrees to 30 degrees with cold upwelling’s arriving in June bringing nutrient rich waters from the depths of the Lombok straight. The majority of our dives are drift dives, where we jump off the boat and drift with the current until our dive is complete and the boat crew picks us up wherever we surface. The fast current draws in the large sharks and rays as it is easier for them to breathe. The ocean surrounding the three islands are a MPA (Marine Protected Area) with many research projects and conservation initiative helping to protect the land and sea park.

My brother and I completed our Advanced Open Water PADI dive course with Bali Dive Academy Pemuteran and loved it! Edi was our instructor doing a fantastic job explaining dive concepts and checking in on us during our dives. The equipment was very well maintained and I felt very safe using it. To top it all off the entire atmosphere of the dive shop was lovely, super relaxed and airy.
